What you don't know CAN hurt you, points out Royce Murphy, CEO at Real Status

Royce Murphy, CEO at Real Status Donald Rumsfeld, Defence Secretary in the George W Bush administration was famously ridiculed during a Defence Department briefing when he said, “We know there are known knowns: there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns: that is to say we know there are things we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know."
According to Royce Murphy, CEO at Real Status, this is exactly how the majority of companies around the globe are managing their IT infrastructures, and what you don’t know can hurt you.

According to Royce many businesses, including many blue-chip companies, are not making informed business decisions about their IT systems. He explains, “Information Week reported a study in 2011 claiming that North American businesses alone lose $26 billion per year due to IT system downtime. If companies better understood how to set their IT operating priorities, which are still often based on first come – first served or whoever is shouting the loudest, this downtime could be greatly reduced.”

Although they have numerous sources of performance and security data, few CIOs can see and understand the complex inter-dependencies between applications and the various components of their IT infrastructure supporting them. As a result, decisions are made without understanding the business impact of problems or changes.

As a company focused on visualising IT and cloud computing infrastructure, Real Status’ 3D modelling software, Hyperglance, provides its customers with a new way of seeing through the growing complexity in computing environments, so they understand what is truly important. It maps the inter-dependencies between computing infrastructure and applications and enables better and faster decisions because users can see the business impact of problems and changes.

It complements existing IT management tools, such as those from VMware, by aggregating and visualising their data in real time. Hyperglance uses patent-pending 3D modelling and visualisation technology, so users can see dependencies and performance data at the same time for thousands of devices and application components across physical, virtual and cloud-based infrastructure.

Royce continued, “There are no unknowns with Hyperglance. It dynamically solves the problems of growing complexity from virtualisation and cloud computing. Users have an end-to-end model of their applications and infrastructure, and they can see their performance and security data on the model.
Knowing what business processes problems affect and then enabling the user to accelerate the time to fix the most important problems, reduces their greatest risks, and improves their capacity utilisation. That makes Hyperglance very powerful for organisations dependent on their IT systems.”

A short video demonstrating Hyperglance’s capabilities is available on the Real Status website: www.real-status.com.

Join Real Status at the VMWare Partner Exchange in Las Vegas, 13th - 16th February.

Real Status is an IT infrastructure modelling and data visualisation software company, and our flagship product is Hyperglance. Hyperglance automatically builds three dimensional models showing the dependencies between IT applications and infrastructure. It aggregates and visualises performance and security data from existing IT management tools on the model in real time.

Hyperglance enables CIOs, IT managers and their teams to see their management data and key dependencies in one place and at one time for thousands of connected devices. Their priorities and decisions are based on understanding the business impact of problems and proposed IT changes, which reduces risks, lowers costs, and improves capacity utilisation.

Smartphone users warning on data limit penalties

Ofcom has published the Communications Market Report for 2011, revealing smartphone fever is sweeping the UK, with over a quarter (27%) of adults and almost half of all teenagers (47%) now owning one.

Smartphones are more interactive than 'normal' mobile phones, with users able to access specialist applications (apps), social networks, email and download music and video content direct to their mobile. As a result of this growing functionality the volume of data transferred over the UKs mobile networks made a massive jump of 67% over the figures for 2010.

Dominic Baliszewski, expert at www.Mobilechoices.co.uk pointed out: "Smartphones are everywhere you look these days, on the train, the street and (according to Ofcom's report) even the bathroom! Their growing popularity is no surprise as they are incredibly useful, allowing you to stay in touch, listen to music and even watch TV whilst on the move.

"Smartphone users may get a richer experience from their phone compared to regular mobile users, but it is important to keep on top of mobile phone data usage limits, as this is where many people come unstuck and incur excess data penalties which can greatly increase their monthly bill.

"Smartphone download limits, with the exception of the iPhone, can be rather stingy and the penalties can be over 10p per MB of content download over and above your usage limit. These costs mount up very quickly so anyone who is unsure of how much data they are using should follow our tips below to avoid being stung."

Mobilechoices.co.uk's top tips for downloading on a smartphone:

1. Check the small print: Customers who don't know their limit can incur substantial penalties unknowingly, so always ask your provider direct and find out about early warning systems that they may have in place to inform you if you are reaching your limit. Data usage limits on smartphones can cost upwards of 10p per MB (this is a staggering £100 per GB).

2. Set up your own warning system: Use your phone to monitor your usage, reset your phone's usage counter on your monthly billing date and use this to keep track of your usage.

3. Use Wi-Fi when you can: Making use of a Wi-Fi connection in a hotel, coffee shop or even your local McDonalds allows you to surf for free on, what is usually, a faster, more reliable signal.

4. Turn off Apps: Some apps use the internet to update your information automatically – for example, tools that keep track of your location and post it to Facebook. Allowing these to continue running throughout the day will eat into your data allowance, so turn them off if they are not in use.

5. Shop around: If you still find you are frequently reaching your data limit before the end of the month, consider the other options available to you. Compare different providers, for example, Three offers unlimited data where as O2 offers additional mobile 'data bolt-ons' - both are ideally suited to customer who do a lot of downloading on the move. You don't need to change your phone, just your SIM, to take advantage of other deals.

Thousands of HTC phone user details exposed online?

This is the extraordinary claim made by mobile phone comparison site www.mobilesplease.co.uk which says that the phone records of HTC customers were exposed online.

A spokesman for the comparison site said: “The personal details found included the names and addresses of the HTC customers in question together with the serial number and IMEI number of the mobile phone they own.  If these details fell into the wrong hands then customers could become the victims of fraud such as phishing scams.

“The vulnerable web address were numbered sequentially and if each contained consumer information then over 25 million records could have been exposed. When we tested a sample of around 50 web addresses all contained data and around 30% contained personal details of individual customers.

“These details were available by typing a simple website address into any browser on any computer. The website address in question does not belong to HTC but to a third party contractor who carries out certain customer services on behalf of HTC.”

A member of staff at www.mobilesplease.co.uk added: "A malicious person with limited technical knowledge could have written a simple program in 30-60 minutes to harvest these records. Then they could do what they like with them."

www.mobilesplease.co.uk informed HTC of the problem and they claim HTC got their contractor to secure the website concerned.

HTC have not issued a statement regarding this allegation.

Lot of data to log? You'd be nuts not to go Squirrel!

If you have a lot of data to log, you would, indeed, be nuts not to get a Squirrel. Because Grant’s new 32-channel Squirrel data logger is fully configurable via a large graphical display.

Grant Instruments (www.grant.co.uk), a world famed maker and supplier of data acquisition products, has introduced its enhanced multi-channel (up to 32 universal inputs) Squirrel SQ2040 series of high performance portable data loggers featuring an improved fully configurable graphical LCD display and updated design.

SQ2040 data loggers now includes an intuitive, easy read graphical LCD screen with clear and simple navigation system, that's fully configurable via the integrated four button keypad. The loggers can be remotely configured with no need to connect to a PC or Laptop. Logger status, setup or real time graphical data (meter mode) can be easily viewed, giving accurate (that means better than 0.1%!) and reliable results within minutes of switching the unit on.

The 2040 handheld data loggers are designed for mobile data logging applications like field research and external engineering projects such as environmental projects, service or commissioning systems or processes, in food manufacture and research and in all general engineering and manufacturing production projects.

This highly flexible, multi-purpose logger has 16 differential (or thirty-two single ended) analogue input channels to measure current, voltage, resistance and temperature, and eight event inputs. All eight event inputs can either be logged or used as triggers to automatically start or stop logging.

Onboard memory can store up to 14 million readings, plus retaining up to six separate logger configurations. Memory can be extended by using removable MMC/SD cards. The unit can fulfil many data logging requirements, including somewhat more demanding applications that require up to 100 readings per second on four channels (model SQ2040 4F16).

With multiple high specification 24-bit analogue-to-digital converters to facilitate concurrent sampling, four alarm/relay outputs the data loggers are an out-of-the-box solution for a wide range of data logging applications. The Squirrel SQ2040 boasts very good battery life for unattended logging. The new logger is powered from internal cells or an external power supply connection is available, should this be required.

The onboard RS232 communications can be connected to a GSM modem and there is a choice between wireless or Ethernet ports to facilitate system networking and remote data transmission.

SquirrelView set-up and download software for a PC is provided as part of the system to enable users to export stored data to a chosen PC based application.

The Squirrel range is (naturally!) compatible with Grant’s comprehensive range of temperature probes and with commercially available sensors for measuring a variety of physical parameters. Each data logger within the Squirrel range comes with a 3-year warranty. OEM versions of most products are available on request. Just tell Grant what your requirements are, and they'll do the rest.
