Calling Telecom operators

Telecom operators are looking for new ways of financing infrastructure investment and acquisitions as they look to capture growth in increasingly competitive Asian markets, say industry and finance leaders.

The latest methods and wider strategic implications will be assessed at the TMT Finance & Investment Asia conference in Hong Kong at the Intercontinental Grand Stanford on November 1 (www.tmtfinance.com/asia).

“As operators continue to invest in their infrastructure they have a continued requirement for additional capital,” commented Ranesh Verma, Managing Director and Head of Structured Finance TMT Asia, ING who will be speaking on the financing panel.

“Against the background of continued market volatility, operators and vendors are increasingly exploring ways to expand and diversify their sources of funding; finance partners need to be increasingly innovative in the solutions they offer industry participants.”

The latest developments in risk management and acquisition strategy will also be highlighted on the M&A Panel at the conference which features heads of telecoms, media and technology from Credit Suisse, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Standard Chartered, Herbert Smith and the World Bank.

"A high cash-generating sector like telecoms is an attractive revenue stream for Governments - both through licensing agreements and taxation,” said Hal G. Bosher, Sr. Underwriter, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency at The World Bank Group. “In the current economic uncertainty this raises the likelihood of disputes as Governments seek to offset lower tax receipts in other areas of the economy. This risk has only been heightened as telecoms is increasingly seen as a utility that should be regulated and managed by the public sector.”

Telecom operators are also currently raising finance and increasing operational efficiency by outsourcing mobile towers infrastructure assets, and the latest business models, operators and deal structures will be assessed in the CFO Round Table and Infrastructure Investment Panels. Speakers include CEOs, CFOs and regional heads from Etisalat, Vimpelcom , Viom Networks, Quippo, American Tower, Citigroup, Apax, Bakrie Telecom and Telstra. The TMT Finance & Investment Asia conference, now in its third year, gathers telecom executives, investment bankers, specialist financiers and advisers from across Asia to assess new investment opportunities and strategies. Supporting partners and sponsors for 2011 include Booz & Company, Allen & Overy, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Herbert Smith, MSL Asia, Moody’s Investors Service, Actel, Invest Hong Kong, Thomson Reuters and the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association.

Telecom infrastructure investment strategies assessed in Hong Kong as operators chase next generation growth

Telecom operators, financiers and advisers from across Asia will be meeting in Hong Kong on November 1 to assess new infrastructure investment strategies as industry leaders look to deliver growth and higher margins.

With profits on voice services falling across the region, telecom operators are investing billions of dollars on the transition to growing data businesses. The latest strategies for investment and restructuring will be debated at the annual TMT Finance & Investment Asia conference, which uniquely gathers telecom leaders, investment bankers, investors and advisers from across the region.

Investment into 4G, LTE and 3.5G network technology is a critical area for debate this year, along with the sale of existing mobile tower assets to raise capital for investment into next generation networks and services. New financing and business models will be highlighted in a series of panel debates and keynote speeches.

"Government and private sector financing is combining to develop fixed broadband networks in a manner not seen before, “ said Michael Reede, Partner, Corporate, Allen & Overy, a speaker at the conference. “In the mobile sector there are increasing distinctions between passive and commoditised active elements on the one hand and advanced functionality on the other. Different ownership structures are emerging for each."

Reede, who will be making a keynote speech titled: “Next generation fixed and wireless networks - how they will change financing and M&A models over the next 10 years" will be joined by speakers from over 30 companies at the conference. Participating companies include Telstra, Etisalat, Huawei, City Telecom, Tower Bersama, Asia Broadcast Satellite, Protelindo, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, SBI Macquarie, Mobicom, Standard Chartered, Bakrie Telecom, American Tower, ANZ, ING, PwC, Reuters, DBS, SBI Macquarie, Herbert Smith and the World Bank.

Session themes include the Telecom Leadership Round Table; The M&A Panel; Infrastructure Investment and Towers; Raising Finance for Telecoms; The Telecom CFO Round Table and Cloud Services.

“Telecom operators need to meet the challenges of going ex growth in most markets in Asia so monetising next generation infrastructure and services is a critical theme for this year’s conference,” said Dominic Lowndes, Managing Director of BroadGroup TMT Ventures, the event producer. “Investment into backhaul networks, the sale and leaseback of towers, and vendor financing methods will feature heavily in public and private debates.”

Crown Telecom on Growth Trajectory Makes First Acquisition

Crown Telecom Solutions has acquired Strata Communications. The North West-based communications engineering company has built a reputation for customer service and a strong customer base over 20 years of trading. “This is a perfect fit for us,” Crown Telecom managing director Mark Nicklin pointed out.

“Strata is a pure engineering operation, whereas, here at Crown we offer hardware, line rental, broadband/data services, mobiles and billing. This will add to our technical capacity just as new accounts require us to expand the engineering side of our business,” Mark he added.

Other acquisitions could be on the cards, too. Mark explained. “An acquisition fund to support the growth programme has been established and we are looking for compatible telecoms companies that we can integrate into the Crown business.”

Growth at Crown Telecom since launching last year has been spectacular, driven by the sales operation which has successfully won major corporate accounts and work with SME’s throughout the UK. “We are retaining all Strata employees and are actively seeking more staff in sales, support and engineering as part of our planned growth,” Graeme Jones, operations director, explained.

“Even before the Strata deal, we grew the business organically by 50% in the last six months and we see this natural momentum being maintained. People with talent and energy should send in their CV if they want to join a growing company with massive scope for career development.”

Crown Telecom is a WLR3 (wholesale line rental 3) provider, making them one of a small number of BT service resellers to be fully accredited. As such they have access to the latest technology. This includes superfast fibre-based broadband for vision and data. They can order and allocate lines more quickly and proactively monitor lines for faults at 20 minute intervals to maintain high standards of service availability.

Mark Nicklin is a 16 year veteran of the telecoms industry. After early career experience with Stanhope Telecom and Aerofone, Mark moved on to set-up GP Telecom with Tim Price in 2001. This business grew steadily before its sale to Elite in 2008, where Mark remained before setting up Crown Telecom within the NW based Crown Group.

The Crown Group is one of the North West’s largest independent companies with a £120 million turnover. Established over 65 years ago, the core business supplies fuel oils, road fuels and lubricants. Innovations have included the addition of carbon offset fuels and blended bio fuel to support clients’ sustainability programmes

The Crown Group has diversified in recent years to become a national supplier of gas and electricity services to SME’s and major companies. The company also has a specialist division that coordinates utility connections to new developments. Crown Telecom Solutions has strong synergies with existing operations and the same ethos to differentiate from competitors by offering higher levels of customer service and attention to detail.
